From 1 January 2019 longer birth leave for partner

On 2 October, the House of Representatives adopted the bill Introducing Extra Birth Leave (WIEG). This means that, as of 1 January 2019, the partner will receive longer leave during the maternity period.

The statutory paternity leave for the partner is currently only two days. In addition, the partner is entitled to three days of unpaid parental leave.

From 1 January 2019 the partner can once receive paid leave equal to the weekly working hours. This must be taken within 4 weeks after the birth. On top of that, a partner will soon be able to take an additional five weeks of leave in the first six months after the birth. UWV then pays 70% of the salary during this period.

The Senate still has to approve the bill. We will keep you informed.
